Fly rods from Gary Loomis (G.Loomis) have an excellent reputation
worldwide - and that since many, many years! Quite few models of the
American rod manufacturer enjoy absolute cult status today. This is
hardly surprising, because at G.Loomis one hundred percent fishability
meets high-quality workmanship, the best components and timeless design.
Exactly what discerning fly fishers are looking for! In the long
success story of G.Loomis, the legendary Asquith ranks as the absolute
flagship model at the top of the rod podium - and we were particularly
impressed by the two-hand models of this series.
G.Loomis' Asquith series is the compelling result of the closest
collaboration in design, material and manufacturing techniques on a
global scale. The blanks of the Asquith fly rods are based on Shimano's
patented Spiral X technology, in which two carbon fiber tapes are wound
in opposite directions around the graphite mandrel. This technology
makes it possible to reduce material and weight, while minimizing
vibration in the blank and thereby drastically reducing swing weight
during casting. This significantly improves power transmission with an
even thinner blank. How does this translate to the angler on the water?
More precise, accurate casts from the reactive tip while enormous energy
is generated from the lower part of the rod for long distance casts.
The combination of high recovery speed and a progressive bending curve
allows effortless casting, giving the angler a wide spectrum of
tolerance when it comes to line weights.
The Asquith, designed by multiple casting world champion Steve
Rajeff, combines technical progress with traditional craftsmanship and
attention to detail. The two-hand series not only impresses with its
balanced rod action, with the combination of a fast recovery speed and a
deep-loading blank combining both precision and power. Depending on the
casting style, the action of the rod can be perfectly adapted to the
requirements by choosing the appropriate line system. With a little more
weight in for skagit casting, the powerful blank loads deep and
effortlessly carries heavy intruders on the sink tip with little
backspace over the wide steelhead river. At the same time, with a
lighter Scandi taper, the rod's fast, precise tip can be activated to
present, for example, a light tube fly accurately and gently to shy
salmon in crystal clear water. But beyond the thought-through and
compelling rod action, the Asquith impresses with its high-quality rod
construction on full-length. Titanium SiC stripping guides and flexible
titanium Recoil snake guides, as well as a classy down-locking reel seat
made of anodized aluminum with CI4 carbon insert not only give it
visually its finishing touch, but they are functional building blocks
that contribute to the compelling performance of the rod. Bottom line
is, that with the Asquith, G-Loomis has succeeded in creating one of the
lightest and most powerful rods on the market, which convinced us from
the first cast - both with short, targeted casts and with distance
casting. Whether it's on a small salmon river in Norway, targeting giant
sea-run browns in southern Argentina, or chasing steelhead in the
raging waters the east coast of North America, the Asquith will
undoubtedly enhance your fishing from the first cast to the last.
